It’s easier to embrace a zero-waste lifestyle in our comfort zone. Still, nobody says that zero-waste travel will be easy. However, trying our best can be the first step in this transformation.

During your next vacation, how about challenging yourself and trying zero-waste travel practices?

Sometimes you can fail. Or you may feel in the mood. Conditions may not be appropriate. Actually, the thing isn’t like that, as “I’m the best zero-waste practicer.”

Try these zero-waste travel practices

Snacks

Yummy. Snacks are a big helper to satisfy our hunger. However, people mostly prefer unhealthy packaged food from grocery stores. This causes a lot of plastic waste.

Why don’t you prepare your own snacks? Or you can buy some from a local bakery. Also, fruits and nuts are the most practical and healthy choices anywhere. They’ll keep you full, stop your hunger and provide the nutrition your body needs.

Hygiene

Wet wipes, single-use plastics, and more. Yes, we’re talking about “hygiene.” If you’re a backpacker or camper, you can carry reusable items, like fork, spoon, and mug.

Ok. I admit that wet wipes are a practical solution, but it becomes trash. That’s why, as far as possible, we eliminate using wet wipes and carry a cloth wipe. An example from old times: when I was in primary school, every child was carrying a cloth bag to blow their nose.

Moreover, you can take your toiletries (in refillable packages) while traveling. And, if you can’t take a bath for a few days, don’t be a freak; enjoy wildlife. Ensure the ingredients of them are nature friendly. You never want to harm nature, oceans, or any ecosystem with your products.

Did you know that apple cider vinegar can be an alternative to conditioner?

Meal

Fruits and nuts are the yummiest for snacks, getting the nutrients you need during the day. However, you’ll also want to fill your stomach in the mornings and evenings. Because you’ll need to replace the energy you spend all day with activities. Ok. In short-term trips, you may not care about an unbalanced diet, but you must pay attention to your diet for the long term. Otherwise, vacation can become hell (you may get sick and weak.)

Search for local restaurants near your accommodation. They may be cheap compared to fancy restaurants. At the same time, supporting locals while traveling is a part of being a green traveler. Moreover, avoid using single-use plastic in the restaurant.

No disposable items

The main idea is simple: avoid single-use plastics. So having a cloth bag, water bottle, cutlery, etc. would be best. Sure, I don’t say always carry all these items with you, but we can have them and use them whenever we need them.

Transportations

Hitchhiking can be an excellent alternative to car sharing, but can be dangerous in some places. You’ll have fantastic stories but take care of yourself first. Besides, everybody may not want to hitchhike. In this case, you can research more ecological transportation. For example, you can prefer airlines that offer carbon offsetting. Besides, if you go on vacation with your car, you can share your car instead of traveling alone (for free or for gas sharing.)

Unfortunately, not everything is as fancy as Instagram photos. The plastic reality that welcomes you at your destination hits people in the face like a slap. This planet is our home. Nature is our responsibility.

Let’s share your advice about zero-waste traveling.
Happy travels!
